What is isolation?

Isolation applies to individuals with a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19. It involves the diagnosed person having no interaction with other members of the household. The person must have their own bathroom and a door to their quarters. Meals are delivered to the room. This is difficult in a private residence, and may be impossible if the person in isolation is a young child.

A person diagnosed with COVID-19 must isolate for 10 days after the onset of their symptoms, until they are symptom-free OR 10 days from the date they were tested if they were asymptomatic.

What is quarantine?

Quarantine applies to individuals exposed to a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19, or who have recently traveled internationally. People in quarantine feel well, but may be pre-symptomatic. A person in quarantine must monitor themselves closely to determine if they have developed symptoms of COVID-19. The person must have their own bathroom or clean the bathroom between each use. They must sleep in a separate room from anyone not in quarantine, in case symptoms develop at night. If they develop symptoms, they must be tested and start an isolation period.

A contact must quarantine for 10 days after their date of last contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19. If a person has ongoing contact with a case during their isolation period, they must quarantine for the case’s 10-day isolation period, plus an additional quarantine period. For close contacts, we will accept a negative test result collected from the 5th to the 7th day, so that the person can return to school after the 7th day.

Can students carpool or share Ubers / taxi drives?

Unfortunately we will not authorize friend dismissals and are asking parents to avoid carpooling outside of the student circle because it undermines one of the pillars of our risk mitigation strategy, which is to reduce interactions between different groups. If children get rides with those from different groups, the groups will mix and this will affect our ability to trace contacts and stop the transmission chain.

What if my child travels internationally?

If your child travelled abroad, testing before and after travel can reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19. Testing does not eliminate all risk, but when paired with a period of staying at home and precautions like wearing masks and social distancing, it can make travel safer by reducing spread on planes, in airports, and at travelers’ destinations.

  1. Get your child tested 3 days before your flight and follow Itamaraty's recommendations.

  2. Keep your child home for 4 days after the flight and get a molecular test on the 4th day. If it is negative and they have no symptoms, they may go to campus.

There are no specific recommendations for travelling within Brazil at this point.

  1. Teste seu filho 3 dias antes do voo e siga as recomendações do Itamaraty.

What if a parent or household member travels internationally without the student?

The household member should follow the same requirements for students travelling internationally: getting tested before the flight and again on the 4th day after arriving in Brazil. The child may continue to attend school if the household member is fully quarantining from their family (as outlined above). If the household member becomes symptomatic during their quarantine, the student and any other close contacts would then need to quarantine until the primary contact is tested and receives negative results.

What if a student or teacher in my child’s class is diagnosed with COVID-19?

The school will contact-trace all positive COVID-19 cases within the campus. You will be notified immediately if your child is a close or proximate contact in school of anyone who is diagnosed with COVID-19. Due to privacy laws, we cannot inform you of the name of the person diagnosed, only that your child had contact with them. Any close or proximate contacts will be required to quarantine for 10 days from their date of last contact with the positive person. This will likely mean that the entire class will be home for up to 10 days, depending on the primary contact’s school attendance.

We will require you to quarantine for this period and not travel, interact with other members of the school community, or schedule play dates or group learning pods.

We will also notify the Vigilância Epidemiológica of the diagnoses, and they might gather more information.

What if my child has already had COVID-19?

Typically, it is not recommended that we require weekly testing for people who have previously tested positive for COVID-19 because there is a likelihood that they may continue to test positive after they have recovered based on the presence of non-infectious trailing viral remnants. This is due to the sensitivity of the lab-based molecular tests that we use.

However, due to the presence of mutations and evolving variants and the variability in an individual’s ability to stave off re-infections, we have altered our approach until further research is conducted on the active variants present in Brazil. We will now require that all students and colleagues submit weekly tests independently of previous positive results.

Why are you not offering the bus service?

What if I test negative right after the positive result from Mendelics?

According to current scientific data, the likelihood of a false positive is lower than 1%. On the other hand, even the most precise RT-PCRs can return a negative result for someone who has COVID-19. From a public health standpoint and to err on the side of caution, we will assume all positive cases are really positive. This is consistent with the practice we are following across Avenues.
